GiGi's Cheers On!

This just in from Spirit Mom Julie Snyder!

“We’ve got spirit yes we do, we’ve got spirit, JUST LIKE YOU!”

GiGi’s LXC Cheer Team made their debut Sunday, September 13 in the Saufen Unds Spiel Parade in Johnsburg, Illinois.  Riding on a parade float can be an overwhelming experience for any child so of course we were cautiously optimistic about the outcome of this event for our kids with special needs.  That caution was soon replaced with happy faces and cheering voices!

The kids had a wonderful time throwing candy to the crowd and cheering with their fellow LXC cheerleaders. The experience for our kids was priceless and it was heard time and again from members of the Johnsburg community how nice it was to see our kids among the LXC Cheer Squad.  It turned out to be a wonderful day filled with fun for everyone!
Thank you to Coach Kelley and her husband of Layton Athletics for donating her time, believing in our kids and for providing a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about Down syndrome and children with special needs.

For more information on GiGi’s LXC Cheer Team or for sponsorship opportunities please contact GiGi's Playhouse McHenry by calling (815) 385 - PLAY or emailing mchenry@gigisplayhouse.org

Self-Advocacy Group

Brenna is often found at Friday Friends and is on the Self-Advocacy Council of Northern Illinois.

From the Northwest Herald:

If it were up to Cathy Christensen, someday, adults with disabilities would make their own decisions about where to live.

As founder of the Self-Advocacy Council of Northern Illinois, the Bull Valley resident and her 21-year-old son, Jason Nosbaum, want to change the way adults with disabilities are treated in Illinois.

Brenna Lindquist of McHenry dances back to her seat Sunday after her turn as the Self-Advocacy Council of Northern Illinois hosted its third anniversary party during cosmic bowling at Brunswick Zone in Algonquin. The council is dedicated to the belief that all people with disabilities are capable of and should be directing their own lives.

Spread the Word - End the R-Word

This is from www.r-word.org. This seems so simple but it is SO important. Please take a moment to read, visit r-word.org and take the pledge!

r-word.org

Across the United States, people on college campuses, in high school cafeterias and workaday offices have launched the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign. The goal: make people stop and think about their hurtful and disparaging use of the word “retard.”

Students at William Chrisman High School in Independence, MO, were among hundreds of volunteers who spread the word about the terrible impact of using "retard" as an insult. Click to see more photos.

What It's All About
Spread the Word to End the Word is raising the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the R-word and urging people to resolve to stop using it as an insult, casual or intended. (Take the pledge right now! )

"The earlier we can start teaching this awareness, the easier it will be to reverse the language, " wrote James Saetern of Sacramento, California, in an e-mail to Special Olympics. "This is not just a day of awareness, but a movement to end hate as a whole."

What's Going On
The campaign kicked off with more than 700 events and activities happening throughout the United States – and around the world. Celebrities and just plain folks put on Spread The Word T-shirts (order one for yourself), buttons or stickers or made signs and placards and banners to make it clear that usings the word "retard" as a term of derision is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

One visitor to the R-word.org site said it well: "It was a commonly accepted term when I was growing up and is handed down from generation to generation like all strange sayings that never die and kids keep saying every year. Well, I have chosen to break the cycle and am teaching my kids how wrong it is."

Here's a sample of what happened:

  • State Proclamations
Three U.S. states -- California, Iowa and Oklahoma--have made official proclamations about Spread the Word to End the Word day.
  • Spread the Word to End the Word online youth rally
The 50-minute rally, streamed live on www.schooltube.com, featured actor Eddie Barbanell from the hit movie “The Ringer,” Special Olympics athletes and volunteers, and original music performed by rap artist Rush. Also on the program were original videos produced by young people. High school students across the country were asked to take the pledge to stop using the “R” word and to help raise awareness among their friends. The rally was produced by Miami Palmetto Senior High School 11th-grader Noah Gray, Special Olympics Florida and SchoolTube.
  • News Coverage
  • Take The R-word Pledge Rallies
    • American University, Beirut, Lebanon
Soeren Palumbo's R-word speech played hourly; movie at 6 p.m., "The Loretta Claiborne Story"; posters, pictures, online R-word signups.
    • All high schools in Delaware, USA
All 40,000 students will be asked to sign pledge boards in their schools.
    • Tower Hill School, Newark, NJ, USA
Spread the Word day as culmination of a week of exploring disabilities
    • Fort Worth Independent School District, Fort Worth, TX, USA, all day
Lunch-time rallies, video shows, student testimonials and R-word pledge boards
    • University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA, all day in high traffic areas
Sign pledge boards, visit www.r-word.org, get information.
    • Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI, USA, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in five campus locations
See posters, sign pledge boards, talk with committed volunteers and Special Olympics athletes.
    • University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE, USA, all day in student union
Sign the pledge board, talk about why you support the campaign, get stickers, buttons and bracelets
    • Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA, all day on campus
Sign the R-word pledge, see big-screen displays of Special Olympics and R-word videos.
    • Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, PA, USA, all day on campus
Sign pledge boards, get buttons, bracelets and stickers for free, buy T-shirts

How It Started
Created by young people with and without intellectual disabilities, Spread the Word to End the Word is one element of Special Olympics’ vision of a world where everyone matters, where everyone is accepted and, most importantly, where everyone is valued. Leading the way in promoting acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics opposes prejudice and discrimination, continuously working to dispel the negative stereotypes associated with this population — the use of the R-word being one such stereotype. In a world that has worked to eliminate pejorative racial and ethnic language such as the “N word,” among others, the R-word is gaining popularity.

Actor and activist John C. McGinley, of the hit show “Scrubs,” helped with this effort by making national media appearances on behalf of the campaign.

Volunteer Parade!

”A Salute to Local Volunteers”
Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Parade begins 1:00 pm
we assemble at 12:30 pm
Riverside Drive by the Riverwalk Bridge
(next to Joey T’s)

For additional information contact Scott at (815) 385 - PLAY

Every day we are bombarded with the doom and gloom of a bad economy, rising foreclosures and unemployment. Reading the paper, listening to the radio or watching television news can be depressing and stressful. It seems that we as individuals can have little effect on national events but that’s not the case at all. As volunteers, we have been making a huge impact on our community and at a time when our community needs us most. And our community needs something to celebrate that’s FREE!

The Rotary of McHenry would like to have your organization participate in our first ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 15th, at 1:00 PM. We will assemble at 12:30 pm at the parking lot of Joey T’s on Riverside Drive. It’s a short parade route, down Riverside Drive to Veterans Park at Broad and Riverside Drive. This is a community based parade, no commercials, no political campaigning, just a salute to local volunteers. For this one day, we’ll all be Irish and celebrate our town and the local groups that serve our residents.

Please contact Phil Sweeney at (847) 409-7445 or Donna Schaefer at (815) 385-5605 for additional information.

A Charles Fox Testimonial

  • Are you feeling frustrated at your child’s IEP meetings?
  • Are you unfamiliar with what rights you have?
  • Do you want to learn how to be a good advocate for your child?

Whether you have been through the IEP meetings once or a handful of times, or if you are a novice and have a child that will be entering the school district next year you may want to attend a free seminar that GiGi’s Playhouse in McHenry is hosting. On Wednesday, February 18th at 7:00, Charles Fox an attorney from Northbrook will be speaking at our facility to share with all of us on how to provide a high quality education for our children. He brings to us his legal expertise and will advise us on how to pursue our rights to provide our children the best possible education that is allowable within the school system.

Maybe you feel your child has the right to a 1:1 aide, he/she's not getting enough therapy time, the class setting is not challenging enough to meet your son/daughter's needs or he/she should be receiving assistive technology to help him/her overcome his/her communication barriers. Whatever the situation may be, please take a couple hours of your time to come and listen to Charles speak.

Charles is not only an advocate for parents at mediations and IEP meetings; he is also a parent of a child that has special needs. He understands what we are experiencing from the ground up. He truly cares about helping parents of special needs children fight the fight. This is the time to bring all of your questions and concerns that you might have about your child’s future in the educational system to be answered.

Testimonial: One of our current volunteers, Dawn Cummings whom teaches “Signing til Dawn” on Friday nights from 5:30-6:30 is currently retaining Charles as her attorney to provide her the support that she requires to provide her son the best possible education that he deserves.

She quotes, “I love the school district we live in and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. However, I knew in my heart that the school was not offering us the best scenario possible to provide our son the challenges that would allow him to succeed in his current academic setting. After trying to persuade the school staff to listen to our requests as to what our son requires we ran into a brick wall. After much research and glowing reviews I stumbled upon Charles Fox. He was the best thing that ever happened to me and my family. He is extremely knowledgeable, empathetic to our families needs and knows the system inside and out. I will never go to another IEP meeting without his presence. I highly recommend that you come to this free lecture to listen to what he has to say. You will not be disappointed.”

Fighting Leukemia

On January 17, 2007 Doctors told us something a parent never wants to hear: "your daughter has Leukemia. "

I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Snyder and her daughter Jenna last week and she shared with me her story of Jenna's battle with Leukemia. It is truly an inspirational story. These days, as Jenna is looking toward the completion of her treatment, her mom has become a member of the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training and is planning on running in the Chicago Marathon on October 11th of this year to raise money for research and patient services.

Children and adolescents with Down's syndrome have a 10 to 30-fold increased incidence of leukemia Every 150th such child will eventually develop leukemia and the increased risk extends into adulthood. These facts are heartbreaking and difficult which is why it is so important that causes like Julie's are supported.

Please visit Julie's webpage and read her awesome story!

Julie, we're all looking forward to cheering you on this fall. ♥
