Ever thought about tutoring?

My name is Heather and I'm a Literacy Tutor at GiGi's Playhouse in McHenry, Illinois and I can safely say I have been blessed with one of the most fun, most challenging, most rewarding and downright most fabulous volunteer opportunities ever.

Basically, I get to help kids and adults with Down Syndrome learn how to read. But that's just the beginning. I see my students weekly and in our sessions I get to know them, hear their stories, celebrate their victories and grieve their losses. I love how my student Lisa and I end up in giggle fits during our sessions because we share the same sense of humor. I love how Matt's face glows with pride after I've made him work really hard and he's kept at it to the very end. I love how I've gotten to watch Anna develop over three semesters - there is such a strong woman inside that tiny girl!

I also love what I've learned. That patience is worth more than gold and you can never, ever have enough of it. That the littlest steps forward are often the most important and always deserve celebration. That humanity is diverse and beautiful and sharing life with people who are different than you will show you all kinds of things about yourself that you never knew, that you never even knew to look for.

As wonderful as it is, I'd also have to admit that it's probably not the easiest volunteer gig, and I'm not talking about the teaching part. GiGi's has a fabulous training program and lots of supportive staff and volunteer professionals, and after a few sessions, you get the hang of the program and so do your students and then everyone starts having a lot of fun. But you have to be creative and quick-thinking, patient and flexible, and above all: sincere. Without sincerity, no one can learn anything from you. And you also might find that your students work their way into your heart and if they have to stop coming for a while, you miss them. Or if something tragic happens in their life, you might find yourself crying with them. And I guarantee that you will end up bragging about how interesting and wonderful they are to whoever will listen.

In order to keep providing this free program to our students, we need tutors. Volunteers who will take on this task. People who will weekly donate a couple of hours their time for several weeks to teach a child or an adult with Down Syndrome how to read.

We are getting ready to start a new Literacy Session in October and if you would like to join our Literacy team, let us know. You need no teaching experience as all the training is provided. If you're interested in becoming a tutor, please call Laura Cook, Literacy Director, at (815) 385 - PLAY or email lauracookies7@gmail.com

Meet Our Volunteers: Jackie Bueno

Jackie Bueno is a volunteer who hosts Nuestros Angeles, a program where Spanish speaking families can come together!

How did you hear about GiGi's Playhouse?

Through our home physical therapist and early intervention.

How did you become involved as a volunteer here?
I started to take my daughter to the Hoffman Estates location and when they gave me the newsletter, I noticed they had a hispanic play group. Then when I found out there was a Gigi's opening in McHenry, and I thought it would be awesome to volunteer for a spanish play group.

What do you hope to accomplish with Nuestros Angeles?
I hope that I can bring as many hispanic families together out to Gigi's and just experience how great it is.  It's amazing how people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures can come together for one cause.

What would you like to say to the Spanish speaking families out there who may not know about this program?

It's a great program for everyone to come together like a family.  The kids play while the parents get to know each other.

In three words, how would you describe your volunteer experience at GiGi's?

It's been wonderful.

It's because of dedicated volunteers like Jackie that our programs are possible! Thanks so much for all your hard work at the playhouse. =) Come Meet Jackie at the next Nuestros Angeles on Sunday, September 6, 10am - noon!

GiGi's at 2009 Fiesta Days Parade

From our board member, Scott Bradfield:

The 2009 Fiesta Days parade takes place on Sunday July 19th at 1:30 pm. This would be a fun and outstanding opportunity to get Gigi's name out into the community. In order to make this happen I am requesting the assistance of as many Gigi's families and volunteers. We will need help getting some sort of flat bed trailer, help designing and constructing of a float, as well as a location to build and store until the parade. In addition we will need participants to ride on the float as well as walk along passing outcandy/popsicles. If you are interested please contact me at scottbradfield [at] yahoo [dot] com... or at 815-693-6453 by June 6th. I plan on scheduling a meeting on the second week of June at the Playhouse w/ anybody interested in helping out.

Volunteer Parade!

”A Salute to Local Volunteers”
Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Parade begins 1:00 pm
we assemble at 12:30 pm
Riverside Drive by the Riverwalk Bridge
(next to Joey T’s)

For additional information contact Scott at (815) 385 - PLAY

Every day we are bombarded with the doom and gloom of a bad economy, rising foreclosures and unemployment. Reading the paper, listening to the radio or watching television news can be depressing and stressful. It seems that we as individuals can have little effect on national events but that’s not the case at all. As volunteers, we have been making a huge impact on our community and at a time when our community needs us most. And our community needs something to celebrate that’s FREE!

The Rotary of McHenry would like to have your organization participate in our first ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 15th, at 1:00 PM. We will assemble at 12:30 pm at the parking lot of Joey T’s on Riverside Drive. It’s a short parade route, down Riverside Drive to Veterans Park at Broad and Riverside Drive. This is a community based parade, no commercials, no political campaigning, just a salute to local volunteers. For this one day, we’ll all be Irish and celebrate our town and the local groups that serve our residents.

Please contact Phil Sweeney at (847) 409-7445 or Donna Schaefer at (815) 385-5605 for additional information.

Volunteer Fun!

Emilee S. helping her mama by being the smiliest baby EVER. :)

Volunteering at GiGi's in McHenry has not only been incredibly rewarding, but it has been so much fun. I love that when I tell my kids we are going to go "work at GiGi's" their response is always, "GiGi's House?! YAAAAAAAAY!" It's an opportunity for them to hang out with with their Auntie Christine (8, with DS) and the other awesome kids who come with their dedicated parents to help make the Playhouse what it is.

So while we parents are doing this:

Our kids are building forts, reading stories, playing games and making friends.

Christine and Logan in the fort reading.

Christine, Jenna and Logan being buds and watching a movie! There's enough room for everybody! :)

Christine, Micah, Jonah, Logan and Jeremiah hanging out in the fort!

I love the time we spend at the Playhouse and the people we meet there. I feel very fortunate to have this volunteer opportunity which allows me to help build something for my sister and other kids like her... and even more fortunate that my kids are welcomed into the fun! They can play and see first-hand how fun volunteering can be. My hope is that I'm raising future GiGi's volunteers! An evening spent making books for the Literacy Program, chatting with new friends and watching my kids and my sister build friendships is an evening well spent, in my mind.

Plus I get to see happy faces like these!

If that doesn't make you grin from ear to ear, I don't know what would. :)

If you are interested in volunteering at the Playhouse, we would love to have you. We are growing by leaps and bounds, and we always need people to help make books, assist our programming people and many, many other things... Most volunteer opportunities are child-friendly meaning if you want to bring your kids, you can! Please leave a message at the Playhouse by calling (815) 385 - PLAY if you want to be in on the fun! :)
