This is a wonderful story shared with us by the FINDS group...

It was by luck that Nick Williams picked out of a hat his favorite stroke, the butterfly, to compete in for a Dec. 27 swim meet.
It also was only fitting that he was able to swim the 100 butterfly for his first individual event as a member of the Saucon Valley High School swim team.
Participating in an individual event in a high school swim meet may not seem like a big deal to an average swimmer. However, Nick is not your average high school swimmer.
Nick, 15, has Down syndrome.
After swimming as a member of various relay teams for the Panthers in their first couple meets, Nick got the opportunity to compete in an individual event against North Schuylkill. He was truly excited for the opportunity.
Nick, a freshman, didn't score any points for Saucon Valley in the race, at least not on the scoreboard.Unofficially, he finished his heat in under two-and-a-half minutes. He was disqualified when he stopped halfway through the race before continuing on and finishing the event. He did, however, score points in the hearts of the swimmers on the deck as both teams cheered him on.
"He just kept going," senior captain Amanda Long said. "We were so happy that he was doing it and finishing it. You could tell that while he was swimming he knew that everyone was cheering for him. He was having a great time."
That moment stands as a shining example of overcoming obstacles and pursing a passion.
According to his mom, Melinda, Nick has been "one with the water" his whole life.
"He's been a fish since birth," she said.
Melinda and her husband, Rich, have had Nick in the water since he was six months old. He has never looked back.
"We had him learn how to swim because it is a life skill that everyone should know," Rich Williams said. "Every kid that has special needs can have different things they can do better than the other kids, and swimming he can do."
Nick has taken private swimming lessons for the past six years with the last four being at Swim-in Zone in Center Valley with Eva Kook.
"It's been a really neat adventure," Melinda Williams said. "She's helped Nick get to where he is today."
Thanks to Kook, Nick has mastered all four strokes and flip turns, which he says he enjoys.
Daxton Scholl, a junior on the swim team, first encountered Nick a year-and-a-half ago while working at Swim-in Zone.
"He can do better flip turns that I can," Scholl said. "His form is perfect. It's just a matter of incorporating everything together. I can't wait to see him as a senior and see how good he is swimming."
Two aspects Nick struggles with are speed and jumping off the blocks; however, he's working on improving in both areas.
He's only been diving for the past three years and never had the opportunity to jump off the blocks until joining Saucon Valley's team. Currently, he begins his races by jumping off the side of the pool.
"It won't be overnight, but once he gets (jumping off the blocks), he'll get it," Rich said. "It's the technique that he has to work on. Until he understands what it is supposed to feel like it will take a while."
One of the biggest improvements Scholl has seen in Nick in the time he has known him is his endurance.
"He's gotten stronger as a swimmer," Scholl said. "Seeing him come and do just about a full high school practice is amazing."
Although Nick has been swimming all his life, it wasn't until Melinda read about Patrick Lund in 2008 that the idea to have Nick swim for the high school team came about.
Lund, who also has Down syndrome, was swimming for Liberty at the time and had recently competed in his first 500 freestyle race after swimming in mostly 100 and 200 freestyle events.
"You never know when you are going to find your inspiration," Melinda said. "We never doubted that Nick couldn't do anything. We just knew it would take a lot of time to get there. When we read the Patrick Lund story in the newspaper I realized that Nick could have that opportunity, too."
Melinda also credits Karen Gaffney for inspiring her to have Nick join the team. Gaffney has Down syndrome and in 2001 was part of a six-person relay team that swam across the English Channel.
Nick also plays other sports.
For the past four years he has participated in The Miracle League in Trexlertown, a baseball league for those with special needs. He also plays soccer for TOPSoccer in Allentown, another special needs league.
This past summer he was a member of a Special Olympics 3-on-3 basketball team in Bethlehem that placed third in the state tournament.
Nick also enjoys kayaking, bike riding, camping as well as hiking. In October, he went on a 20-mile hike along the Delaware River to complete his Boy Scouts hiking merit badge. Nick has achieved the rank of First Class and is on course to be an Eagle Scout just like his dad.

Melinda admits she was unsure of what to expect when Nick signed up for swimming. She was just thankful he was going to be on the team and hoping for him to participate in a meet or two. However, she said coach Kim Moncman didn't hesitate to say Nick would be in the lineup every meet.
"(Kim) said, 'Well, he's going to be in at least two events every meet,'" Melinda said. "I was taken back. I couldn't even imagine that he would be in a typical sport not the special needs basketball, special needs soccer or special needs baseball, but a typical high school team sport and Nick Williams, who happens to have Down syndrome, gets to swim just like everybody else."
It's not just the physical aspect of swimming that Nick is enjoying. He also is having fun with his teammates, whom he considers his friends.
"He loves the camaraderie," Rich said. "He likes being around his peers. He gets so much from just being there and listening to them. He feels 'I'm just like you.'"
His teammates and coaches like having him around and treat him the same as everyone else.
"The whole team supports him," Moncman said. "They don't let his disability define him. I yell at him just like the other kids."
"We love that," Melinda said. "He struggles often with speech, but in the water he is equal with everybody else."
That support became quite evident as he swam the butterfly in late December. When he stopped 50 yards in, it was his teammates who encouraged him to finish. And when he climbed out of the pool his teammates were there with celebratory high-fives.

What a wonderful day it was...our 4th Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon!!
So many smiling faces from the kids and their proud parents and grandparents, as they strutted and danced down the runway! At first some were a bit timid, but then Larry our fantastic MC turned up the music and away they went...some didn't want to stop once they got going!

Family Fun Night has turnout to be such a great event every month we see new faces participating and having a great time at the playhouse. Family Fun Night!

Last Friday night at our Family Fun Night we had a Chili Cook-Off! Many families came out to sample 8 different homemade chili recipes. Prizes were awarded to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners!! Many thanks to all who came out in the traitorous weather last Sunday for our annual Holiday Party! Despite the weather we had a wonderful turnout~

The kids enjoyed making ornaments, coloring holiday pictures and a visit from Santa. Everyone shared some yummy snacks and desserts. Although it was freezing outside, there was a warm glow in the McHenry Playhouse! Many Blessing to all our families and friends in the New Year!

3rd Annual Getting Down with Fashion Show

Outstanding job models!! What a great show... the day was beautiful throughout! Families and friends gathered together at the Bull Valley Golf Club to watch their "models" strut down the runway, there was some running, jumping, and dancing going on but it didn't matter as long as they were smiling and having fun!! Parents clapped, laughed and some shed a tear or two with pride as they watched them shine. Thank you for participating and making the day so much fun!

Special thank you to all the wonderful volunteers behind the scenes and the fashion show committee, we couldn't have done it without you!!

A Dad's Letter

Written by Jay Marshall, teacher and Flynn's dad. Flynn is a regular at GiGi's Playhouse McHenry and his mom graciously donates her time as the volunteer host of our Teen Tastic program. This article was reprinted from the Nov-Dec Pedaler. Original article can be viewed here.

Thirteen years and three months ago my life changed undoubtedly for the better. That is when my son, Flynn, was born. Of course any parent can say the same thing when their first child became a part of their life, but some parents in my and my wife’s situation, might not have looked on the event in the same way. I suppose it has to do with the way we were raised, and the life experiences we had. I think one way to sum up our outlook was that it came down to our attitude. What made the birth of Flynn different for us was that when Flynn was born we shortly found out that he was born with Down syndrome.

This is an annual letter I started writing about 8 years ago. I send it to my teacher colleagues in Antioch District 34, but also to friends and other acquaintances. I have heard that it has made the rounds to Down syndrome support groups and I guess I am glad about that. I always send it out on October 1st - at least to District 34 – because October is designated as Down syndrome awareness month by various organizations that support people with Down syndrome and their families. But let’s get back to Flynn.

Flynn is now thirteen and many people are remarking on how tall he is. He attends Johnsburg Junior High School, and Nippersink Middle School in Richmond. Johnsburg has an adjusted learning program called ALPS that he really loves attending. He spends most of his day at Johnsburg, but is bussed back to Nippersink to end his day with kids from our home community so that he gets good socialization with two groups of kids. When we go out in the community to home football games or the grocery store or if we are at a parade, I am amazed at all the kids that say hi to Flynn. Just last week a girl said hi at the Richmond Burton game and then she opened up her arms and asked him if he wanted a hug. What 13-year-old boy would turn down a hug from a cute 13-year-old girl? Flynn walked right into her arms! He is growing up and has more in common with most kids his age than we would have ever thought!

Flynn loves to watch TV and his time has now been limited. He loves to play video games, and his time for that has been limited too. He loves to look at books and he can do that as much as he wants. But he would still rather watch TV or as he will say DVD. He can be very resourceful. The limits on TV include some new parental controls that we installed this summer which did not thrill any of the boys. One Saturday morning a few weeks ago Beth could not find Flynn in the house. She found him out in our van that has a DVD player watching a movie in the garage! I thought that was just brilliant!

Flynn’s biggest delay is his speech. As one of our friends figured out this summer, a great way to describe Flynn’s speech is to say that his tongue does not work right. He talks, but for most people most of the time it is unintelligible. Beth and I and Will and Reed are pretty good at interpreting Flynn, but we still have times when we have to really figure out what he is saying. One interesting development I noticed this year is that Flynn is able to give us clues by describing what kind of word he is trying to say, and that we are trying to guess. If he says “nthee”, I might just have to say “What?” Then he will say “name” to tell me that he is saying a name. Then I can guess “Anthony” and he will say “yeah”. He will do this with movie titles bye giving the clue “D V D” too. I think it shows the cognition that is happening in his brain. He just has a hard time getting his thoughts out. He has other cognitive delays as well. His math function is very low. He is adding numbers proficiently using touch math. He does not write very much. But he is in a program that will merge into a program at our high school that will give him the daily living skills he will need to work towards independence. We are excited about the progress he is making and the successes he will continue to have. One neat device he has that he uses mainly at school, but that we need to start incorporating all the time is a speech box. It is a 4 inch by 12 inch computer with a touch screen that he uses to find things to say. I think it has well over 20,000 words. It is amazing, but it does take some time to learn how to use it. One function he has mastered is the phrase “She’s beautiful” which he does not hesitate to say when he goes to the high school each morning to catch the bus. Flynn walks up to the high school girls and presses the button and ‘says’ “she’s beautiful!”

One of the big things I always talk about in these letters is the use of the word retarded. Kids misuse this word at best, and insult each other and people like Flynn at worst. I tell kids retarded does not mean stupid. Retarded means slowed down or delayed. This is just something to be aware of during Down syndrome awareness month, and the rest of the months too.

This letter always goes longer than I think it will so thank you if you are still reading. One other thing I wanted to mention this year is the topic of babies being born with Down syndrome. I can’t remember the exact statistic, but between 25% and 40 % of children born with Down syndrome need heart surgery within days of being born. This is a very good reason to improve screening techniques for genetic disorders during pregnancy. Sometimes there are other reasons people screen, and without making this a big deal I am just going to say that I don’t think there are always good reasons to screen for genetic disorders during pregnancy.

People with Down syndrome have a great deal to teach us. I love that Flynn is 13 and still gives me a hug when I wake him up, a hug when I come home, and a hug when I say good night. I am going to borrow this next bit from a publication on the National Association for Down syndrome web site. It is titled, “If People with Down syndrome Ruled the World.” I think it says a lot.

These are just some excerpts:

Affection, hugging and caring for others would make a big comeback.
All people would be encouraged to develop and use their gifts for helping others.
People would be refreshingly honest and genuine
People engaged in self talk would be considered thoughtful and creative. Self talk rooms would be reserved in offices and libraries to encourage this practice.

Order and Structure would rule

In the world of Down syndrome, there would be a great deal more tolerance for:
Repeating the same phrase or question
Use of the terms “fun” and “cleaning” in the same sentence
Closing doors or cabinets that are left ajar (even in someone else’s house)
Arranging things until they are “Just so.”

Music

Musicals would be very, very, very, big (such as “Grease,” and “The Sound of Music”)*2008 update* (“Hairspray” and “High School Musical”)
John Travolta would be the biggest star.

Television

Classic TV hits would be very BIG and take up at least half the TV schedules.
“I Love Lucy,” “Happy Days,” “The Three Stooges,” etc. would be very BIG.
Wrestling would be very Big.
“Life Goes On” would also be very Big and replayed regularly.

Movies

There would be fewer movies, but they would be replayed over and over.
Movie theaters would allow people to talk out loud to tell what happens next.

No Secret Agents

People would not hurt the feelings of others and they would also not lie or keep secrets.
Therefore there probably would be no secret service agents, spies, or terrorists.

Future Friday Friends/Kids Club is a FREE program for ages 5 - 12 hosted by Carol AnCel. We do seasonal activities, work on following directions, make our own snacks and learn to work as a group. Sometimes our group leader sneaks in educational activities too. =)
